When you travel to South Australia there are a few things that you need to know before you arrive. First you need to disregard anything, anyone in other Australian states say about South Australia. Chances are they've never been here and are just regurgitating what other people from the east coast say about South Australia. Most of what they say is embellished and is generally what they think it's like here.

It is smaller than Melbourne and Sydney so don't expect it to be a huge city.

Some of the myths.

  • Adelaide is a big country town - what with 1.2 Million people?
  • Adelaide is the city of churches- there are a lot of old churches some have been turned into houses, some shops.
  • There's nothing to do! - Wineries on 3 sides of the city, some of the best festivals in Australia, great arts scene, great food scene and beaches on the westside of the city. There's usually something to do every weekend.

History

South Australia was settled in 1836 as a free settlement (no convicts here) by people from England and a few years later Germany. Today you will see a much larger German influence in South Australia than other states. The society was based on the principles of free settlement, religious tolerance and civil liberty.Fleurieu Peninsula

In 1894 South Australia became the second place in the world to grant universal suffrage after New Zealand and these liberal tendencies have been a constant in South Australian history.

In the 1850's copper was discovered and provided an economic boom for the colony. Today you can see the remnants of these mines in Kapunda, Burra and Moonta. Over history though South Australia has tended to be economically behind the eastern states and has relied upon agriculture, manufacturing and mining.
